Siemon Receives Award For Mentoring Program
WATERTOWN, CT – Siemon, a global leader in the design and manufacture of network cabling systems and components, has always believed in giving back to the community. With community service such as scholarship programs, student internships, career development tours, involvement in local school initiatives such as the Watertown High School Robotics Club, and more, Siemon believes that supporting the youth of the community lays the foundation for everyone’s future. As such, Siemon began a Mentoring Program for elementary and middle school children in the town of Watertown, Connecticut, home of Siemon headquarters, and recently received an award from the State of Connecticut for this initiative.
The Mentoring Program began last year when Siemon was the first company to pilot such a program in Watertown. Since then, a number of other local companies have joined in, keeping the Mentoring Program ever growing and providing more opportunities to support additional children. In the Mentoring Program, Siemon employees volunteer time weekly to spend with an assigned child from a local school, giving support, providing encouragement, coordinating activities, and being a positive role model. All volunteers must meet specific requirements and are professionally trained.
Siemon was one of only five companies statewide to recently receive special recognition for its Mentoring Program from the State of Connecticut. The award was given at a ceremony attended by the State Commissioner of Education, affiliates from The Governor’s Prevention Partnership, The Connecticut Mentoring Group, and hundreds of people from participating companies.
“The impact of this program on our young people is remarkable,” said Jeannine Lawton, coordinator of Siemon’s Mentoring Program. “The children really benefit from the individual attention of having a caring adult who consistently spends quality time with them. The students show improved grades and improved attitudes towards school, increased resistance to drug use and negative behavior, and increased self esteem. It’s really gratitying to see the impact one can make in a young person’s life.”
As a family-owned business, Siemon has been making a positive contribution to the community, the environment, and its industry for over 100 years.
